The console "being known for JRPGs" doesn't mean much when no one remember it or sees it advertised. It's also a niche game by genere, and it's appeal/elevator pitch isn't that easy for people to see. Meaning it would need a pretty decent marketing push to get talked about enough to sell well, which never happened. It's just a reaaaally old game at this point, it will get very few sales on people recognizing it and knowing it's a quality game based on the original. So I'm willing to forgive the sense of repetition because of that and great story and unique playstyles for each character. For a small team to be able to make a game like this with those kinds of visuals is no small feat. All of the things you see in the game use traditional sprites. They're a small company that if I remember correctly consists almost entirely of about two dozen visual artists. I wouldn't be too harsh on Vanillaware though. But I can completely understand why people would feel exhausted by the time they have to play through the same level for the fourth or fifth time with little to no changes in enemies and bosses. Personally speaking, the great story and the unique playstyles for each character helped prevent the game from feeling too repetitive. They tried to alleviate the problem by adding in a lot of new mini-bosses, but because at the end of the day each character ends up fighting many of these exact same mini-bosses, it still feels like you're going through the same experience 4-5 times. ![]() It does suffer from problems of repetition. everything else in leifthrasir, save two fights, is easy on hard.Īs much as I love this game, what you said is a legitimate criticism. the challenge stages with two minibosses are hard because it's hard to stun two minibosses at once. the dwarf airships are hard because of their fire jets. Giant trolls are hard because the point where they take damage is in an awkward place. the remake is broken because the encounters are the same, but you have a bunch of attacks that do high damage, stun enemies, and can be recast just by waiting. The original is hard because your attack options are limited, yes. the remake adds guards and dodges, but i didn't have to use them even once to beat the game on hard. you can dodge anything in the game either by jumping or moving-unless it's a swarm of tiny flying things, in which case you hit them. Otherwise, the remake and the original control the same where it's important: square to attack, x to jump, analog stick to move.
